Metal is closely related to people's daily life and widely used in industrial design and rapid prototyping. Let's learn about metal material used in rapid prototyping (CNC Machining, 3D Printing, Vacuum Casting, Plastic Injection Molding, ets).

Introduction of metal materials in industrial design and rapid prototyping

Metal materials are divided into ferrous metal materials and non-ferrous metal materials according to their constituent elements.Ferrous metal materials include iron and iron-based alloys, such as pure iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, etc., referred to as steel materials. Non-ferrous metals include metals other than iron and steel and their alloys, commonly used are gold, silver, aluminum and aluminum alloys, copper and copper alloys, titanium and titanium alloys.

1. Steel material

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and small amounts of other elements.

(1) Pure iron: Pure iron refers to an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of no more than 0.02%.

(2) Cast iron: Cast iron refers to iron-carbon casting alloys with a carbon content of 2.11%~4%.

(3) Steel: Steel is an iron-carbon alloy with iron as the main element and a carbon content of 0.02% to 2.11%.

Alloy steel, also known as special steel, is based on carbon steel by adding one or more alloying elements, so that it has some special properties, such as high hardness, high toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.

Stainless steel is a type of alloy steel material commonly used in daily production and life.

2. Aluminum and aluminum alloy

Aluminum is the most used light metal, and its production and consumption are second only to steel, and it is the second largest metal.

Aluminum alloy is an alloy composed of aluminum as the matrix and other alloying elements. Aluminum alloy is light in weight, high in strength, has excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, is easy to process, resists stamping and can be anodized into various colors.

3. Copper and copper alloy

Pure copper is purple-red, also known as red copper, which has excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, ductility and corrosion resistance, but its strength is not enough.

Copper alloy is an alloy composed of pure copper as the base and adding one or several other elements. Commonly used copper alloys are divided into three categories: brass, cupronickel and bronze. Brass is an alloy composed of copper and zinc. It has good machinability, corrosion resistance and good strength and toughness. It is often used to make lamps and furniture. Cupronickel is an alloy copper with nickel as the main additive element, and is widely used in electrical, instrumentation and medical equipment and other fields. Alloys other than brass and cupronickel are called bronze.
